Theatre as a Synthesis of Art: Otakar Zich in the Context of Modern Science and the Actual Potential of His Concepts

The project focused on the study of Otakar Zich's thought in relation to contemporary aesthetic, psychological, philosophical tendencies (the context of the emerging European modern science at the end of the 19th century) and theatrical-practical context (the context of modernist theatre). This research resulted in an critical English edition of Zich's seminal work, Aesthetics of the Dramatic Art, as well as a series of studies dealing with the establishment of Czech theatre science and its terminology. Furthermore, the team members developed Zich's theses based on the idea of theatre as an autonomous synthetic art towards contemporary theatre in partial studies - the aim of the project was to go beyond the understanding of Zich as a mere "prestructuralist" and to show that some of his concepts can be very well reinterpreted within the framework of ostension and performance theory, phenomenology and psychology of theatre.

Results were presented on the conference The Structural Approach to Art (Otakar Zich and the Prague Linguistic Circle Re-Considered) The keynote speaker were:

  • Prof. Veronika Ambros (University of Toronto)
